Leuser Fine Art Photography

By purchasing this photograph you support crucial wildlife patrol work in the heart of the Leuser Ecosystem.

This unique picture depicts some of the last remaining intact lowland forest of the Leuser Ecosystem, where tigers, elephants, rhino's and orangutans still coexist. Taken with a large format camera and printed on baryth paper, the final print is of a very high quality and extremely sharp, also when printed in sizes of over 1 square metre.

Prices are upon request (eyesonleuser[at]gmail.com) and every sold pictures contributes directly to the tiger protection program of FKL-ACT in the Leuser Ecosystem.

many tiger snares removed - reason to worry

The support of new donors enables the FKL-ACT program to expand patrol activities into new areas inside the Leuser Ecosystem. It usually takes time before a newly estabelished field team becomes really effective, but this time it did not take long before the first tiger snares were found. At the one hand this is good news, as several tiger snares have been dismantled. At the other hand it is rather worrying that so many tiger snares are found in a relatively short time span.

The new team did a great job in tracing illegally set snares, as is shown on pictures below (the area is made unlocatable, not every waypoint is a snare)

tracing snares is hard work

this snare won't kill any tiger for sure

Finding several tiger snares in a short span of time might mean tiger poaching in the Leuser Ecosystem is even worse than initially thought.  More teams are needed to cover all of Leuser's key wildlife areas. The FKL-ACT Program aims to further increase the number of field teams to eventually cover all of Leuser's tiger and other wildlife areas.

The Leuser Ecosystem is the only place on earth were tigers, rhinos, elephants and orangutans live in the same forest area. And as if that's not enough, also the tallest flower of the world can be found in this natural wonderland,  the Amorphophallus Titanum

magical leuser

Leuser's tigers share their habitat with several other critically endangered species, like the Sumatran elephant and the Sumatran orang utan. A few months of camera trapping in one of Leuser's shrinking lowland forests shows it's all still there... Leuser is still a magical place. Help to save Leuser and sign this new petition.

snares again

At this moment we're looking hard to find sufficient funding to continue removing these ugly snares and to keep the trap cameras running!

Sumatran Serow

probably still common in Leusers far corners, but very rare near human settlements. The Sumatran Serow is now listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. We got only three videos of this odd looking species of goat antilope and it seems to be three times the same individual..

three-legged sun bear

After we found iron snares in prime tiger habitat and saw poachers on our videos last year, here's yet another proof that Leuser is not free of poaching yet..

not easy being prey

sambar deer and muntjac, always vigilant in order not to become the next meal of one of Leuser's many predators..

tiger cave

the first mountain cams are ready for action, this one right in front of a small cave at 2200m,  inside we found fresh scats of a large cat...

elephants

New videos from Leuser and again we have some new species. This was the last period the cameras were in this part of the Leuser Ecosystem, so I'm very excited that after 10 months finally a group of elephants have shown up. Watch here how our camera has miraculously survived this wild encounter...

new videos

New videos have been added to our youtube channel. We finally got some nice footage of another cat species, the leopard cat and also, very short, a black golden cat.
Another new species we got is the banded linsang, which lives in trees most of the time, so it's nice this one decided to come down to the forest floor.
We have put a number of brand new cameras along the main tiger trail, so let's hope for some new exiting footage next month!

snares

Poaching is still a very serious threat to Leuser's wildlife. During the last camera check, BPKEL staff has come across a number of snares which form an immediate threat to the tigers we've captured on film in recent months. All snares encountered have been removed,  next month we'll check out if this has discouraged the poachers sufficiently.

white winged duck

Our cameras have captured a very rare creature again, namely the white winged duck, it's said only 150 of these ducks still exist on the whole island of Sumatra, so it seems we'we been lucky again.
The marbled cat and a big male sumatran tiger are also in the new video..

Sound of the Siamang

If there's one animals we most certainly will never capture with our forest cams,  it is the siamang. This ape lives in groups high up in the trees, and as far as I know it does never come down to the forest floor. Attempts to film siamangs with a normal camera always ends up in a disappoinment, because they are shy and move through the canopy with an amazing speed.
However, I do have some recordings of their impressive call, which is very  loud and can be heard from many miles away.

AUGUST

All highlights from august are now bundled and online. Some of the clips you may already have seen, but there's also lots of new stuff. Until now we have 26 different species.

One clip is not in the august compilation but I like to show it anyway, because it could have been a really great video... only if the lens was not blurred by condensation.

The next camera check will be end of september and the footage will be online around mid oktober. Lets hope the otters come back again..
